Play Summary
Mary Harryson, the matriarch of the Harryson family has passed away, leaving the family’s Christmas traditions in the hands of the eldest daughter, Tru Lennan…or at least, that’s what Tru would have her family believe. Determined to make the holiday season a very merry traditional Christmas, Tru pulls out all the festive stops, while stepping on her family’s toes. With non-traditional decorations strewn through the family home, a few family secrets revealed, and a roasting pig in her way, Tru will stop at nothing to have a traditional, Very Mary Christmas…whether her family wants it or not.
The Inspiration Behind the Story
A Very Mary Christmas was heavily inspired by the tragically true events of my very own Christmas holiday season in 2023!! After watching my 8-month-old son's first Christmas be anything but traditional, it hit home that the Canadian Christmas comforts that I had grown up with, loved and deeply cherished had gone the way of the great dodo!! Inspired by the chaos of trying to make new traditions…or lack thereof, A Very Mary Christmas explores the lengths we go to recapture that festive, traditional magic — even when things don’t quite go to plan!
Production Details
This comedy features a dynamic cast of 6: 3 men and 3 women, and will really come to life with a relatively simple, yet versatile set that will require multiple entrances and exits to keep the physical comedy alive and well!! A Very Mary Christmas has been workshopped twice, receiving enthusiastic feedback and constructive offers, along with a healthy amount of laughs from the actors. With the necessary changes made, this play is ready for a full production and is searching for a stage to call home for the ‘25/’26 or ‘26/’27 season!! A Very Mary Christmas is the perfect show for theatres looking to bring some festive cheer and farcical fun to their upcoming lineup!!
